There are many stories in our Puranas and Granthas which describe the power of penance performed by Rishi-Munis. Many Rishis were able to perform outstanding deeds due to this power. Once, there was such a rishi named Agastya. Worried about his marriage, he created a wife for himself in a weird way. He freed the world from the atrocities of Ilvala (इल्वल) and Vatapi and did many more astonishing things with his limitless power of digestion.
